The Brecht Renaissance: German Playwriting since 1990 Free Public Lecture Speaker: Dr Birgit Haas - Macgeorge Visiting Speaker Thursday 14 September 2006 @ 06:00 pm The Open Stage, Arts Centre Building
The lecture will look at the Brecht reception amongst the new, young generation of German playwrights. As this lecture will argue, there is a strong tendency to revive and reshape Brechtian techniques. Drawing on examples such as Dea Loher, Oliver Bukowski, and Roland Schimmelpfennig, I will argue that since 1990, a new phase of the Brecht reception has begun.
Birgit Haas completed her doctorate in 1998 with the topic: The Theatre of George Tabori. 1999-2004 DAAD-Lektorin at the universities of Keele and Bristol (GB); 2004-2005 teaching at the Germanistische Seminar at the Universität Heidelberg. Since 2005 she has been a lecturer in drama at the University of Exeter (GB).
Major publications include: Das Theater des George Tabori (2000), Modern German Political Drama 1980-2000 (2003), Wendetheater – Theater der Wende (2004), Das Theater von Dea Loher (2006). As editor: Macht – Performanz, Performativität und Polittheater seit 1990 (2005); forth. (ed): Der Postfeministische Diskurs.
Dr. Haas' visit is generously supported by the Macgeorge Visiting Speaker Award. There will also be opening drinks in the foyer after the public lecture to welcome guests to the symposium.
