Russell Fewster : 'Presence and Mediatization' This paper considers the presence of the actor in relation to mediatization of the theatre space, in particular the kinaesthetic relationship of the performer to real time video projection. This will be based on my recent production of The Lost Babylon by Takeshi Kawamura at the 2006 Adelaide Fringe Festival - an Australian-Japanese co-production combining various acting styles with video projection. In this paper I will be analysing the kinetic construction of a scene that integrated actors with projected computer game three-dimensional space. The paper will argue that there are four bodies that need to be considered when examining the actor’s presence: phenomenological, semiotic, aesthetic and hyper sign. The Methodology will draw upon history of the Lost Babylon project, with reference to interviews with actors and technicians, illustrated by video documentation. The construction of the video game scene from Lost Babylon will illustrate how the body can theatrically relate to gaming technology, while incorporating aesthetic and political narratives.
