FREE PUBLIC LECTURE
The School of Creative Arts is pleased to present the following public lecture:
Stargazing: the Lighthouse keeper, the Situationist, and the Philosopher of Science Thursday, 27 October, 6 pm - 7 pm
Dr Peter Hill, Senior Lecturer in Visual Media, is a Glasgow-born artist and writer who has been working in Australia since 1988. He exhibited his Superfictions at the 2002 Biennale of Sydney and his book Stargazing: memoirs of a young lighthouse keeper won a Saltire Award for Best First Book of the Year 2004.
Dr Peter Hill will give readings from his book Stargazing: memoirs of a young lighthouse keeper, which describes life on three uninhabited islands off the west coast of Scotland in 1973. All the issues of the day - from Vietnam to the Watergate hearings - enter the lighthouses through television new programs and radio broadcasts. Dr Hill will also cover events in his life after his time on the lights, including the Guildford Pub Bombings; the Situationist art movement; and influences on his research into Superfictions through the philosophy of science.
Copies of Stargazing will be available for puchase after the lecture Publisher: Random House
This free public lecture will be held in the open stage, Arts Centre building, corner Swanston and Grattan Streets, University of Melbourne, Parkville. Bookings are not required. All enquiries to the School of Creative Arts, phone (03) 8344 8362. Parking is available on campus - $4
