General Resources

A303a Postgraduate Lounge ‘SCAtharsis’ has three desks with computers and a printer available for general use, a lounge area and kitchen facilities (fridge, microwave, boiling water, sink). 

For access, please apply to the Postgraduate Programs Officer Coralie Crocker in room A203.

Lockers
A limited number of keyed lockers is available in room A303A.  To request a locker, email Coralie Crocker, ccrocker@unimelb.edu.au

Photocopying
Postgraduate students may have limited access to photocopier located in Room A206 for the purposes of copying official documents.  (See Postgraduate Programs Officer, Coralie Crocker (room A203)

Student email
All students MUST set up their University postgraduate e-mail account, as it is the primary means of communication between postgraduates, their supervisors and the School. Information on how to activate and setup your free university e-mail account can be found at the Information Divisions “IT Guide for Students” website: http://www.studentit.unimelb.edu.au/itguide/ or from the SCA’s web site: http://www.sca.unimelb.edu.au/student/

Student University email accounts can be set up to forward email to another account using the Webmail service.

After hours building access
Students can use the building after 6.00 pm during semester when evening classes are being held.

Notice Board
The Postgraduate notice boards are situated in the corridor, level 2, Arts Centre Building. Notices of interest to postgraduates are regularly updated. Seminars and other events are sometimes arranged at short notice, so keep an eye on these notice boards and read your emails.

Graduate Centre
Become familiar with the many facilities on offer in the 1888 Building.  There are a Resource Room that has information on scholarships and grants both in Australia and overseas; study rooms with computers; dining and common rooms; the Graduate Presentation and Publishing Centre (a state-of-the-art multi-media laboratory that helps students to produce high quality presentations); photocopying and fax machines; and seminar programs. It is also home to the School of Graduate Studies http://www.gradstudies.unimelb.edu.au and The University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association (UMPA) (http://www.umpa.unimelb.edu.au/)

The University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association (UMPA) http://www.umpa.unimelb.edu.au/ is housed in the School of Graduate Studies http://www.gradstudies.unimelb.edu.au/ and organises many events, forums and vocational short-courses for postgraduates. You can receive weekly updates on current opportunities for postgraduates: skills courses, library resources and databases, conferences, public lectures and other events, via GradFlash, the free School of Graduate Studies Friday emailbulletin. SCAtharsis
SCAtharsis is the School of Creative Arts Postgraduate Group.
Its aims are to enhance the academic and professional life of SCA postgraduate students; to encourage social interaction of students within the Department; to provide academic support to fellow postgraduates; and to represent SCA postgraduate students to the Department, Faculty and University.

SCAtharsis organizes a postgraduate seminar program and an annual creative salon.

Computers and IT

A303a the Postgraduate Lounge has 4 networked G4 iMac computers suitable for basic word processing, email and Internet access, and printing with user-supplied paper.

Labs
The SCA has two computer labs available to students (excepting when they are being used for classes):
A304 - iMac teaching lab: 22 G5 iMac computers, accounts are required.

A403 - Multimedia lab: 5 networked Computers.
Note that there is a generic postgrad log-in.

Dial-in network access
Dial-in access is available to all SCA Postgraduate students, on the approval of the School Manager or the Head of School. Full-time students have an allowance of ten hours of access per month.  Students exceeding this quota will have their access denied, but will be advised by email beforehand. Resources for practice

Visual Media

Photography:  A large black and white darkroom, two smaller colour darkrooms, processing rooms and a photographic lighting studio.

RA colour processor and an Ilfachrome colour processor.

Students also have access to the digital lab on level 4.

35mm, medium format cameras and tripods can be borrowed for short periods. These facilities and equipment are shared by undergraduate and postgraduate students. For health and safety reasons the facilities can only be used when a lecturer or technician is in attendance. (See Cherie Winter Room A401C, tel: 8344 8570).

Visual Arts:

There are painting, printmaking and drawing studios; and workshop facilities in Metal, Ceramics, and Wood. These facilities and equipment are shared by undergraduate and postgraduate students. On level seven, rooms 701, and 715 have been set aside for postgraduates. For health and safety reasons the facilities can only be used when a lecturer or technician is in attendance.  (See Stephen Cottrill A215 or A104, tel: 83448337; or Deb Williams, Room A711, tel: 8344 8269).Digital Media:  A range of film, video and multimedia production and post-production facilities including television studio and video editing facilities are available on Level 4. A G5 computer is located in Room 413. (See Eileen Wall Room A411, tel: 8344 8738).

Theatre Studies

Two studio/rehearsal rooms on Level 4 in the Arts Centre Building: Room 419, a large sprung-floor space suitable for movement, dance and drama and Room 404, the black hole, a smaller multipurpose space. Postgraduate students can book rehearsal spaces free of charge (see Theatre Manager, Mark Richardson, Room A320, tel: 8344 8353). Postgraduates also have access to the open stage, a flexible performance space with a seating capacity of 150.  This space can be booked through the Theatre Manager for public performance.
