Creative Arts undergraduate students

Students may be aware of the recent academic changes at the University of Melbourne under the Melbourne Model. This has necessitated significant changes in the Faculty of Arts both to curriculum and Faculty structures. In 2008 The University of Melbourne will offer a suite of 'New Generation' undergraduate degrees which will prepare students for the changing world of work and provide a pathway into a broad range of graduate programs, including research degrees. From 2008 the University will introduce the first of its new graduate schools including Law, Nursing, Architecture, Building and Planning and Education.

As part of these changes the School of Creative Arts will no longer be operating as a separate department within the Faculty of Arts from December 31 2006. The Bachelor of Creative Arts degree and the concurrent Diploma of Creative Arts will have their last intake of students in 2007. All programs of the present School, together with the academic and administrative staff, will be transferred into a new unit, the School of Culture and Communication, from 1 January 2007.

This letter is to assure currently enrolled Creative Arts students that the Bachelor of Creative Arts degree, both as a stand alone degree or as part of a combined degree, and the Diploma of Creative Arts will be taught out to completion. I would like to assure you that the staff at the School of Creative Arts and the Faculty of Arts will be available to provide you with support and advice throughout the transitional period.

The undergraduate Creative Arts courses will continue to guarantee choice and quality of offerings, (although, as is already the case, some individual subjects may change in content and form). In some instances, current regulations may be subject to modification to facilitate and improve student choice.

The University's commitment to the creative arts is in no way diminished by these changes. A process has begun which will reshape and improve creative arts offerings across the University over the coming years. It is expected that Creative Arts students will be able to benefit from subjects developed under the new BA model. Active measures are being undertaken to develop greater collaborative arrangements across the University in the area of creative arts, including with the Victorian College of the Arts, which becomes a Faculty of the University from 2007. Creative Arts students may also benefit from these collaborative initiatives.

In 2007, the Creative Arts programs will continue to operate from the Arts Centre Building and the Creative Arts Office will help students with advice and enrolments. If you have any concerns or queries relating to your degree please do not hesitate to make a time to see a course/student advisor (Ph. 83443431). Academic staff will be available for consultation and advice in the normal way.
