SCAtharsis Aims:
1. To enhance the academic and professional life of SCA postgraduate students
2. To encourage social interaction of students within the Department
3. To provide academic support to fellow postgraduates and thus foster communication of research ideas and collaborations
4. To represent SCA postgraduate students to the Department, Faculty and University

Events

Socials

We run social gatherings to welcome new researchers to the SCA. These social events are casual affairs to promote contact between researchers, inform new researchers of the facilities and resources available, and to encourage those midway or almost through their research to rise from their cave and share the light.

Friendly Friday Drinks: next event at 4pm @ the Deep Dish Bar on Friday 27th May after the Seminar Day.

Symposiums + Salons

We also run annual Symposiums to facilitate discussion, understanding of each others' research, feedback, and practice with academic presentations in an informal fellow-SCA-researchers only audience. There are now two themed Symposiums run each semester with an additional Salon that commenced in 2004 to showcase and provide an avenue for presentation of creative work and theories on them, and contribute to the creative arts methodology.

Other Events

SCA Research Skills training session

A special session on research skills for SCA postgrads arranged with library trainer Ruth Browne. The session covered:

Endnote (bibliography software);
Searching UOM library catalogue and electronic journals;
Searching external journals and setting up alerts etc;
General skills to assist a researcher in the Creative Arts;

It was held on Tuesday 1 st March from 2.30-4.30pm in the computer lab in room 304, School of Creative Arts building.

Helpful Hint #2:
As a postgrad at the SCA you are allocated online hosting of a personalised webpage. This is intended as a one-page overview of your academic profile and can be easily stored in your personal folder on the School's server for uploading by the IT Co-orindator. Such a page on the university web is an excellent way for people who search the web for you or on topics you are researching to find your page, it offers a great opportunity for making yourself known, and faciliates feedback from interested parties. Helpful Hint #1:
Did you know that as a MCA and PhD researcher you are allocated $300 and $500 respectively every year for buying books, conference fees, purchasing art materials, whatever?! Ask your supervisor for details.
