Description: Weekly day program based in Bendigo involving the indigenous youth at school, of the City of Greater Bendigo.
It is important for young people to be able to express themselves within their surrounds and on their own terms. This is particularly important for young people 'at risk'. Real to Reel provides this opportunity. The manner in which this music project has been designed enables young people to explore and develop music for themselves. Whilst the program is done in collaboration with two professional musicians, they are not being dictated to and the learning of new creative skills and the production of their own music is often an important reaffirming experience. They can become producers and contributors to society and achieve recognition for their efforts rather than experiencing marginalisation and non-participation.
Outcomes: The outcomes for the participants include: the creation of music that confirms their identity; allow collaborative work with professional artists in an environment of mutual respect and equal worth; the opportunity to channel challenging or frustrating experiences/fears into a meaningful and expressive form; to feel the liberating power of producing a work of art that is able to touch the broader community.
The project will culminate in the production of a series of complication compact discs that will highlight the work of the young people. These CDs will be distributed throughout the region and an exhibition and celebration of the work will be held in Bendigo in November 2004.
