Jack Hibberd's play 'White With Wire Wheels', directed by David Kendall, was first produced at the University of Melbourne in 1967. This seminal work heralded the emergence of a 'new wave' of Australian writers, actors and directors.

In 2007 the University of Melbourne, in conjunction with Melbourne University Student Union Ltd. and the Theatre Board, will be presenting a 40th anniversary production of 'White With Wire Wheels,' directed by Susie Dee at Union House Theatre, Wednesday 26th - Sunday 30th September.

This anniversary production will be supported by a two-day symposium, 'Enter the New Wave,' to reflect this dynamic and revolutionary period in Australia's theatre history.

Guest speakers will include: Graeme Blundell, Betty Burstall, Max Gillies, Jack Hibberd, Liz Jones, Sue Ingleton, Aubrey Mellor and John Romeril.

Key themes:

  • Period of the New Wave 1967-70
  • Impact of the late '60s and the emergence of the new wave on Australian theatre
